THE CLIENT
DBCS is the think tank behind Singapore Good Design (SG Mark). Held every year since 2013, the award recognises and celebrates the best in architecture, interior design, product design and user experience design, with a focus on innovative projects that positively impacts communities in Singapore and around the region.
THE CHALLENGE
As the venue sponsor of SG Mark 2022 Awards Ceremony & DBCS Gala Dinner, Jewel Changi Airport welcomed more than 190 guests – including VIPs Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and National Development Sim Ann – to the Cloud9 Piazza on 25 Aug 22.
The venue, located on the top level of Jewel Changi Airport, is known for its uninterrupted views of lush greenery and being a unique vantage point for watching the complex’s iconic indoor waterfall. These features provided the necessary grandeur for the occasion.
Designing the space for the awards show and gala dinner then became our priority. The process was split into two parts, entailing both the conceptualisation of a floor plan capable of seating an expanding guest list and the seamless integration of various elements of the event with the venue.
WHAT WE DID
We began to plan in earnest a month before the event as guests started to RSVP. Aiming to unlock as much space as possible from the 1000 sqm Cloud9 Piazza, we leveraged computer-aided design to quickly envision different floor plans. This gave DBCS the flexibility to add to the guest list without compromising the event experience.
Aside from a production booth, speakers and a stage flanked by two LED walls, each measuring 5m x 3m, the final floor plan made room for 191 guests – 11 more than originally intended. We achieved this by adjusting the sizes of the tables and optimising their arrangement.
Still, an awards show and gala dinner thrives on a unique theme. To preserve Cloud9 Piazza’s nature-inspired aesthetic, we focused on creating soft details with our lighting fixtures. This meant dressing the space in a warm glow and capitalising on gobo projections.
As the event drew to a close at 9pm, we piloted a pair of drones masquerading as LED butterfly kites over the event space – just in time for the daily light & sound show at the indoor waterfall.
THE OUTCOME
Our versatility played a key role in getting the best out of the available space at the event venue. At the same time, we built on its nature-centric decor to deliver a rousing awards show and gala dinner.
